This idea of ‘the edge’ kept coming up for me in 2025. Podcasts, articles, books – it seemed to pop up everywhere in my work; Coaching, Facilitating training, Leadership development… I’ve thought about it a lot.
For me, it isn’t a razor-sharp precision cutting edge, or a competitive edge.
It’s that bit that sits just outside your comfort-zone and just before you aren’t in control anymore.
It’s where you push yourself. Like racing a Scalextric car as fast as you can but easing off before it flies off the track.
I found myself operating at my edge a few times last year and on reflection I loved it. I also realised I hadn’t been there very much at work over recent years.
I didn’t intentionally go looking for the edge, in honesty I was just trying new stuff to make ends meet and navigate the TV landscape.
These ‘edge’ moments felt big and terrifying, exhilarating and rewarding.
Yet each one started small with a big deep breath, a bit of self-belief and a first step forward:
For me this was:
- Saying Yes to something in 2025 that I said No to in 2024 because I didn’t think I could do it. I just said yes and figured out how to do it.
- Reaching out and making new connections and believing I had something to offer. I introduced myself and said ‘this is what I can do’,
- Arranging a call to get information about a course I fancied. A couple of meetings later I was signed up and ready to throw myself in.
In 2026 I now know I can lead online webinars with 100+ people, I can travel to unis around the country to speak about TV production and I can work as a coach.
TV in 25 didn’t offer many opportunities to find my edge, however 25+ years in TV has given me the tools to work at the edge and I will keep reminding myself of that as I build this portfolio of things that I can do.
Hopefully TV in 26 will take me to the edge again. I hope you get to spend some time at your own edge too
